Song for M started from the reflection on the current condition of art practice under which artists are often destined to visit a site for a shorter or longer term and questioned to react to the local life. It consists of roughly 2 visual elements: one is a long sequence where the artist tells her story prior to the trip, about imagined days on Momoshima, a small island in Seto Inland Sea, Japan, about which only limited information and impression are given; The second part is shot in situ, after arriving to the actual island.

Drawing a map of the island on a studio desk in Berlin, the story presents a fake myth evolving around the landscape of the small island, where finally Kim states to "leave the gathered material where it is, as perfect as it is". The sites such as rundown cinema or mountain that are mentioned and surely misinterpreted in the made up story. In the shots of Momoshima these spots appear, through which the discrepancy between the imagined and the actual is captured.

The piece is accompanied by an original score by Hyoungjin Kim, composer based in the US who after the artist's request reacted under similar condition of rendering the idea on a never-visited place into one's own artistic language. The fictive landscape of wave, the flux of old and new are structured into an ironic harmony, where moments of contact occur among disparate tonal elements. Even though Song for M narrates the experience of approaching a specific place, general notion of travelling and questions on the meaning of temporary engagement to a place are challenged.

<M을 위한 노래>
