Vagrant Genes is a two-channel video composed of the Itinerary projected at the museum and Choreography released via Sylbee Kim’ s YouTube channel. Through the ecology of migratory birds, the work reflects on the human migration that has become difficult due to CoViD-19. Kim develops a kind of gymnastics for the isolated human body with Berlin-based Korean choreographer Jung Sun Kim. This choreography is transmitted to Nacca, a Japanese activist in Busan, and practiced on Eulsukdo, an estuary of migratory birds®‘where also the MoCA Busan is located. Their experiences as migrants are connected through the artist’ s intimate camerawork.

Itinerary presents the gymnastic exercise, informed by the movement of migratory birds and vagrants that navigate guided by the Earth’ s magnetic field and the inclination of the starts as well as bird flu that they transmit. At the same time, it reflects on the interrupted global airway industry in line with the destructive aspects of our capitalist civilization. The narratives intertwine with Kim’ s entry to her motherland as the “carrier” of the gymnastic exercise. On the other hand, Choreography on Kim’ s YouTube channel can be accessed to excercise from one’ s own location of isolation and quarantine. It imagines the flow of energy, the navigation of migratory birds and the airflow they ride on.
